Weight Management
In the NHS region of Trent, which includes Leicester, 24.5% of women and 17% of men are known to be obese (with a body mass index greater than 30). Virtually all people with obesity develop some associated physical symptoms by the age of 40, and the majority will require medical intervention for diseases that develop as a result of their obesity before they are 60.
In the UK, an estimated 700,000 children are now classified as being clinically obese and these statistics will influence the delivery of health care at the Humberstone Medical Centre in years to come.
Patient Body Mass Index (BMI) Database
We are currently creating a confidential database of our patients’ body weight/height to aid the development of our weight management advice.
Patients are welcome to make an appointment with our practice nurse to discuss weight measurement, and may be referred to our GP for weight reduction medication if appropriate.
How do I calculate my body mass index (BMI)?
Measure your weight in kilograms or pounds and your height in centimetres or feet, and then work out where you are on the following chart:

If your BMI is 25-29 then you are overweight. If it is greater than 30 then you are classified as obese.
