Cervical Smears

NHS cervical screening saves about 4500 lives a year in England. It reduces the risk of developing cervical cancer and thanks to the screening programme, cervical cancer is now an uncommon illness in the UK and the number of women who develop cervical cancer has halved since the 1980s.

The test is used to detect changes which could, in time, turn into cancer and early detection and treatment can prevent 75% of cancers developing.

Cervical smears are undertaken at the Humberstone Medical Centre and the results analysed at the Leicester Royal Infirmary.

Women aged between 24 and 65 years of age are offered cervical screening every 3 to 5 years. If you receive an invitation please make an appointment with one of our practice nurses. The appointment will involve taking a sample of cells from the cervix which is then sent for analysis and the results will be sent to you at home via the post.
