Aortic Aneurysm Screening Clinic
Abdominal aortic aneurysm is an abnormal swelling of the main blood vessel in the abdomen, and can be found in 5-10% of men aged 65-79 years. Although most cases produce no symptoms, a major complication is rupture which presents itself as a surgical emergency and has a high mortality rate.
It is believed that screening throughout the UK will save over 2000 premature deaths per year. Because of this, the Humberstone Medical Centre has become one of a selection of Leicester medical practices participating in a screening programme for male patients reaching the age of 65 years.
The test is held at the surgery and consists of a short, painless ultrasound examination of the abdomen. Patients found to have a swollen aortic aneurysm will be referred to the Vascular Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary for further tests and advice.
