It has been recognised for a long time that Learning Disabled patients have a variety of medical problems such as an increased chance of thyroid disease, mental health problems and osteoporosis; they are also known to have a shorter life expectancy. The Government’s White paper ‘Valuing People’ identified amongst other priorities in this group of patients the need for annual health check ups. In the light of this, annual medical check ups for Learning Disabled patients will commence later this month at the Humberstone Medical Centre. Patients’ carers will be sent a questionnaire and a urine sample bottle, and this will be followed up with a medical examination at the surgery with our GP and practice nurse .

These clinics are being supported by NHS Leicester City, and we hope in time that they will improve the health of our Learning Disabled patients.
